The Flash Database

  • Perhaps of even greater impact will be the revolution in RAM that is just around the corner. The technique that allows spinning disk to hold TB of data in such a small space has been applied to memory in laboratory situations. I can only speculate as to what this will mean in terms of memory capacity but given that 10 years ago my PC has a 2GB disk drive in it seeing a 16 GB laptop becoming a 2TB laptop would seem to be a distinct possibility.

Servers will easily be operating in the TB range so even SSDs will merely be backing stores to incredibly fast databases.

  • Understandably, SQL Server (like most products?) is still catering for the majority of customers. Perhaps changes like SSDs would require would best be offered as an alternative side-by-side engine implementation. By that I mean that Microsoft, and the respective vendors of other products, would supply both engines in the product either of which could be selected to use. The selection could be either automatic or configurable or, even possibly, both.

EDIT: "configurable configurable" just didn't make sense 😉

  • If Microsoft isn't doing it already, I think making the engine more aware of its disk subsystem and adjusting accordingly would make it a stronger product. There are probably original design assumptions that should at least be reevaluated in the new SSD world.

    Try Meta-configurable... 😀

Don't tell me that you too have read the UML spec which talks about Meta-Metadata :pinch:

No, I'm having nightmares doing dynamic configuration involving variables in SSIS. I'm think about having a Kickstarter to hire someone to water balloon the original SSIS developers.
