  • The most honest suggestion I can make, don't run it at all. The DTA recommendations are usually weak, at best. Sometimes they are down right frighteningly dangerous. I am a strong advocate against its use.

However, if you do stop it in the middle of a run, you will leave behind artifacts, primarily sets of statistics as it tries things out. By and large they won't impact your machines adversely, too much. But, those statistics will be maintained as your data changes, adding somewhat to the overhead of your system. If your systems are very large, you may see the negative impact.

But, since you should only be running this against a test or development system, NEVER against production, it shouldn't be that big a deal.

You're not running it against production are you?

  • If you must use DTA, don't run it against production, don't set it to automatically implement recommendations and don't set it to remove indexes.
