Hi,
I'm looking for some guidance on upgrading SQL Server 2008 version 10.1.2531.0 up to R2 which I understand will be 10.5.xxx
I have tried running the installer for R2 SP2 and R2 SP1 but the installer prevents the update saying
The version of SQL Server instance MSSQLSERVER does not match the version expected by the SQL Server update. The installed SQL Server product version is 10.1.2531.0, and the expected SQL Server version is 10.50.1600.1.
What is the next step? Clearly R2 SP1 is too much of a jump but I really have struggled to find any download in between.

SQL 2005 R2 is a separate version, it's not a patch.
You need to purchase a licence, download the full installation media and run an upgrade.
What you're trying to do is the equivalent of applying a SQL 2008 patch to SQL 2005, it's not going to work.

Hi Gail,
I don't have SQL Server 2005...it's SQL Server 2008 (10.1). I'm trying to upgrade from 2008 base to the R2 release. Forgive me if I'm mis-understanding the builds / numbers. I certainly don't have 2005 involved here.

Ok can anybody point me in the right direction of the 2008 R2 download installation media please?

Depends how you bought the licence.
2008 to 2008 R2 is not a patch, it's not a free download. It's exactly the same in terms of versions as 2005 to 2008, different versions that require different licences, separate purchases.
