I notice in my error log there are messages which says the Databasename IO is frozen for snapshot then follow by IO is thawed, it also say that the "Database backed up: Database: databasename(time): 2010/09/12(07:51:45), pages dumped: 1, first LSN. But really it appears that it didn't back anything up. This is on my SQL 2000 box (ver 8.00.2039) we have upgraded our backup utility ArcServ from version 16 to 16.5. could the problem be with our backup utility and, is this a know issue And how to fix it???

That message is 2 1/2 years old. Were you taking SAN snapshots then? Is this happening currently?

That is your back end SAN snapshot. We have it here as well. Talk with your storage Admin

Is it a vM machine? usually Its the VMware backups or Net backups that backs up our Disks generates these messages since it takes a full backup of everythng on the disk. You will also be able to view these Backups in the msdb database history.
You need to note down the timestamp and check with your Storage or System Admins on the programs running during that period.

This "frozen and thawed" backup issue caused me many headaches over the years. Both ArcServe and Symantec Backup Exec were the culprits, on different machines. It effectively broke the backup chain (Full, Differential, Log), which I discovered when I attempted to restore to point-in-time, and was only able to recover to Sunday night.
Finally I got the attention of our system engineers, who were able to exempt my data drives from their backup, and they now backup only my SQL Backup drive, and not my SQL Data and SQL Log drives.
