I'm stumped on this one. A network admin I am NOT.
When I try to create a new maintenance plan on this particular 2008R2 server, I get the initial dialog asking for a name for the plan, but after that, while the window is trying to open, the tools never show up under the object explorer, and the main screen just goes white. I also get a dialog with the following:
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (mscorlib)
Additional information:
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation (mscorlib)
Font 'Verdana' does not support style 'Regular'. (System.Drawing)
Anyone ever see this kind of thing before?

Generally - errors in SSMS creating or modifying maintenance plans can be tracked back to mismatched versions. There are some known issues where you have to re-register the DTS component, but the error you are getting doesn't indicate that.
If your version of SSMS is a lower version than the system you are connecting to - it is likely that is causing the error you are seeing.
