From a Dev machine, I have successfully set up transactional replication using SQL Server 2005 as a Publisher and 2012 as a remote distributor and subscriber. When I try the same thing on the prod machine as a Publisher that is SQL Server 2005 and the same distributor I get the following error.
"The remote server 'SQL2005Publisher' does not exist, or has not been designated as a valid Publisher, or you may not have permissions to see available Publishers."
I configured the Distributor and added the SQL 2005 machine as the publisher. I set the passwords on both sides for Distributor_Admin. I have also confirmed the below.
SQL Browser service is running on the Publisher.
SQL Browser service is not running on the distributor machine.
Remote access is enabled on Publisher.
Remote access is enabled on Distributor machine.
Windows Firewall state is off on the Publisher.
The Publisher and Distributor machines can ping each other.
Have confirmed that I can connect to the Publisher via SSMS on the Distributor using TCP/IP. I opened SSMS and choose Options > Connection Properties Network Protocol > TCP/IP.
I can't figure out why this works on the Dev machine and not the Prod machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Even though I set this up previously, the Log Reader Agent account was not set up in the Distribution database at all. That was my issue.
