Thanks Paul for posting a nice question on SQL 2012. I referred this link and marked the correct answer 🙂

I thought those three utilities were deprecated in SQL 2008. They don't seem to exist in SQL 2012. *confused*

I did not know about these, so this question was a learning experience. Thank-you very much, Paul!

I had not realised there is literally a utility for everything, so I guess that's handy to know. I'd used sqlcmd and bcp but it's always good to learn of other possibilities.

Badly worded question but with some research was able to get the three most likely answers that were either deprecated in 2012 or non-existent in 2012!

Yes. 🙁 But the voices in the back of my head were reminding me that there were features of Profiler and Trace which were really deprecated in SQL 2012. Couldn't remember the details before my first cup of coffee. 🙂
So apparently Profiler for Trace Capture and Trace Replay are deprecated. *shrug* I'm under the impression that Trace is deprecated. I've only used Profiler as a lazy dba's access/tool for trace. What else will Profiler be used for? *curious*

It isn't deprecated for use with Analysis Services - and that's about all.

I never did work out what the question was supposed to mean until after I had answered.
Did it mean three things that were deprecated in 2012 but not in ant earlier release? That is the most likely meaning of the wording, but there aren't three such things in the list provided to chooose from.
Did it mean three thatings that were deprecated in 2012 and perhaps also in earlier releases? That stretches the meaning of "from" rather a lot, but if the above meaning was wrong that seemed most likely. There are plent such things, but there are not three of them on the list.
It didn't occur to me at all that the question wasn't about items in 2012 that were deprecated, but about items that weren't in 2012 at all. A very great stretch of the word deprecated - it's difficult to believe that anyone could write "deprecated from" when they meant "discontinued in" (although that appears to be what's happened here).
So I picked profiler (which sot of fits the apparent meaning, since in 2012 it's deprecated for use in connection with anything other than analysis services) and picked a couple of others (which don't) at random so that I could see the answer.
I do think the wording is awful, if it had just said "discontinued in" insead of "deprecated from" it would have been a much better question. And I might even have got in tight :w00t:

I too thought the wording was little off.
makepipe Utility - This utility has been deprecated in Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms162804%28v=sql.90%29.aspx
readpipe Utility - This utility has been deprecated in Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms162818%28v=sql.90%29.aspx
odbcping Utility - This utility has been deprecated in Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms162756%28v=sql.90%29.aspx
However I still like the question, because it forced me to learn something new. Again, the idea of the question was excellent, but the wording, not so much.
