Missing Transaction Log Backup Schedule!!!

  • Hi all, I have a rather perplexing issue regarding a scheduled T/log backup not executing!!

I'm using an agent job to automate the backup of one of our company DB's with T/log backups scheduled during the working week at 11:00, 15:00 & 18:00. Historically, the backup's have performed perfectly but yesterday the scheduled 18:00 T/log backup did not run according to the log (SQL Server 2008 R2).

As it didn't register on the log as a failure I wasn't notified by email and I can't for the life of me figure out why it wouldn't have run. I checked the actual schedule on the job it's perfectly fine, all historically scheduled 18:00 T/log backups executed and the full backup that was scheduled for 20:30 the same evening also executed perfectly.....does anyone have any ideas/suggestions what could have caused the problem?

Thanks for any help/suggestions in advance.

  • Not sure. Is it possible it's still running? Blocked maybe? I have seen that happen, on more than one unfortunate occasion.

  • Thanks for the replies guys, I've checked the activity monitor and called sp_help_job for the specific agent job but neither show any problems. I've even looked at the job steps execution history report for the agent and that's showing no failures or issues.

The only 'out of the ordinary' event last night was that I restarted the server at 17:17 after installing windows updates but all the SQL services (including the Agent) started up again automatically and I ran DBCC CheckDB on the DB's at 17:21 as well as checking the agent jobs and nothing was amiss. The full backup also ran at 20:30 the same evening and that's a scheduled agent job as well!! Baffled much........... :ermm:
