General Backup File Archive Techniques/Best Practices.

  • This isn't really a support question, but more a general "how do you do it" type query.

In our organisation we use Redgate backup. We backup 17 SQL instances with a total of about 100 databases across these instances.

Redgate Backup is configured to do a full backup of each of these databases every night and 15 minute log backups, which it writes to a central server so that the data is off the local servers. After 7 days, the oldest files are deleted by Redgate Backup, so we always have 7 days worth of backups easily accessible to restore in a hurry. We also copy each backup file to a remote site via Redgates backup to secondary command, which we keep for 24 hours in case we lose our primary site.

On the central server, this results in around 3 terabytes of backup data, which overtime, is growing as the databases grow. Each Friday, we use Symantec Backup Exec to write this data to tape, so that it can be archived and stored offsite. This process is repeated monthly and yearly, so that we can potentially restore historical data up to 3 years ago.

The problem is, we are having issues getting successful backups of the 3TB of data onto tape. The jobs regularly fail and we think it is due to the fact the the redgate backups change so frequently. The Backup exec job takes a while to run, during which a number of log backups could have taken place so older files would have been deleted and now no longer exist for backup exec to read, as well as new files are now in the folders. We think this is causing the issues for Backup Exec as the data is changing so frequently. We have logged a call with Backup Exec to see if they can help.

I would be interested in what people do to archive their database backups and how they secure long term backups offsite in the most efficient and resilient way. 3 TB of data isn't a huge amount to be backing up to tape once a week and surely other organisations must archive very large amounts of data to offsite storage regularly.

Any help would be great on understanding what options are potentially available.

  • this clearly seems to be a problem of backup exec.

request a fix and/or evaluate other backup solutions.

  • Hiya Maddave,

What error does the Backup Exec job fail with ? Is the Advanced Open File option enabled in the backup job properties ?

Additionally, would you PM me the support case number.

    Thanks,

Thanks Vivek. My colleague, who manages Backup Exec logged the call last week, but he is currently away on leave this week. When he is back I will follow up with him and get the case number to you.

  • Great, thank you.
