HTML reports not rendering properly from SQL Server 2008R2 Express Ed w/ Adv Services

  • I have several reports which were developed in SQL Server 2005 that I am now trying to run in SQL Server 2008R2 Express Edition with Adv. Services (aka SSRS). When I execute the reports the little spinning dial appears on the screen to show its running, but it never finishes. However, if I send the output to PDF or Excel the data is there.

It works fine in SQL Server 2005, and was previously tested in SQL Server 2008. And it runs fine in SQLServer 2008R2 EE Adv from BIDS/Visual Studio. It tried executing the report from both IE 11 and Chrome, and both are giving the same problem...(never finishes).

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm baffled.

  • I sometimes have problems with reports doing this. Have you tried it in another browser?

Problems like this are pain to troubleshoot. If it works in a different browser then the problem is in the layout. What I've had to do (and if anyone has a better way Please tell me) is start removing things to see if removal fixes the rendering. I start with headers and footers first. Then non-table textboxes, groups, etc, etc.

I have one report where I've completely rebuild it in a simple table with no formatting and it still gives me grief, renders in seconds in chrome and it just spins in IE.

  • I've tried in both IE and Chrome... both have the same problem. I tested last night using SQL Server Express Edition Adv 2012 and it works fine.. it appears to be some quirk specific to 2008R2... (and I am using SP2)

  • in the project properties there's a setting called 'Target Server Version" what is it set too?

  • When I upgraded the project from 2005 it defaulted this value to 2008.

After a while of fiddling with it and not getting it to work I tried changing the Target Server Version to "2008R2" and redeploying the report, but that didn't work either.

  • That was a long shot, but i like to try low hanging fruit first. Is there anything in the reporting services logs?
