Suddenly (and I'm sure it's my fault) When I double-click on a .txt file, Windows (Win 7 64-bit) opens SSMS 2008 for me to view the text file. This is almost NEVER what I want. I want Notepad, or even Wordpad or ANY text editor.
When I right-click on the .txt file and choose "Set Default Program" I can choose Notepad but the box to "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out.
I tried running Start-Default Programs to "Associate a file...with a program". Same thing, the "Always Use" is grayed out.
I went into the registry editor, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\OpenWithList, and cleared several entries that had SSMS and VStudio. Still no change.
I wasted a lot of time googling this and cannot find a solution. I can choose the default for almost any other type of file except .txt.
Am I the only one??

Try this:
Open Windows Explorer
Find a .TXT file and Right-click the file
Click "Open With"
Click "Choose Default Program"
Select "Notepad" and place a check in the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

The "Always Use Selected Program.." box is grayed out/disabled. That was the first thing I tried.

Check out this link, if you scroll down a bit there is a mention of a workaround

I didn't see that link. The solution was way down in the conversation. I had tried the "Default Programs" yesterday but didn't think to make Wordpad the Default. Once I did that I could then make Notepad the default.
Thank-you!
