Azure Newbie Question

  • I want to set up a demo SQL Server 2012, Sharepoint 2013, Powerview instance. I want to do BI Development, Excel Development locally on my laptop. I need to research Azure because I've never used it before. I'm just not sure what I should be researching. Would this be an Azure VM or an Azure SQL Server instance? I have a monthly credit with my MSDN subscription if that has any relevance.

    Thanks.

  • For what you want to do you're looking at Virtual Machines. SQL Database is just a relational data store, a platform as a service. You need actual infrastructure. You'll also want to look into setting up a virtual network for what you need. Here's a tutorial that is pretty good on how to do that. You don't have to set up the availability group. Just stop after you get the network configured.

  • Thanks Grant. This is exactly what I was looking for.

I also loved your book "SQL Server 2012 Query Performance Tuning ".

  • Thank you!

Good luck on setting up the virtual network. It can be a little tricky at times, but the documentation I sent does work. I've used it a couple of times for setting up environments.
