    how to run BPA tool against sql server database engine ? i have a sql server 2008 active passive cluster. one of the node suddenly stops freezing and all the doesnt allow the connections to hit databases. planning to run BPA tool. by default its installed in eindows server 2008R2 but in the server role list in server manager there's no db engine present. how to run this tool? any suggestions?!

    I might be wrong but I think you may be trying to run the Windows Server Best Practice Analyser against the database when you really want to run the SQL Server 2008 R2 Best Practice Analyser. They are different things.

    I was able to run the BPA tool against stand alone instance successfully. But on cluster it's failing if I provide the virtual name at the sql instance tab. Can someone guide me on how to pass variables to the BPA tool in cluster ?
