SQL Server SP Upgrades in High Availability Envirnoment

  • Hi there - I am in the process of upgrading my SQL2008 R2 machines to the latest service packs (SP2)

The situation is that I have a active active passive cluster set up. Both active nodes are production servers therefore can have no downtime.

I wanted to know if I upgraded my passive node to the latest service pack and failed one of the cluster nodes over, would SQL fail over gracefully even though the SQL service packs were different?

    Thanks in advance. Russell.

  • Found this out whilst testing.

SQL will gracefully failover if the version of SQL you are failing over to is the most recent version (i.e. you can’t failover to a retrospective version of SQL).
