Linked Server.

  • Hi I need to configure linked server on SQL Server 2008.

I have some users with read only rights, and I don't want provide access to that logins on some linked server not all.

  • check each of your linked servers, and make sure the option for this part is "not be made" or "be made using the logins current security context" if you are sure they do not have permissions on the other server.

For a login not defined in the list above connections will

    [X] not be made

with that selected, if the user tries to use the linked server, it will fail with an error, most likely about Anonymous logins

  • Hi Lowell,

It is giving me following error,

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

    ------------------------------

The linked server has been updated but failed a connection test. Do you want to edit the linked server properties?

    ------------------------------

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

    ------------------------------

Access to the remote server is denied because no login-mapping exists. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7416)

    BUTTONS:

    &Yes

    &No

    ------------------------------

  • the screenshot i provided is an example of where the only people using the linked server are explicitly defined in a list; my sa example int he first like is mapped, so sa would be able to create the linked server without error;

mydomain\lowell, even though he's a sysadmin, would fail, because a mapping specifically for my login doesn't exist.

you're falling into that category, i think.
