All,
Please clarify the steps for service pack installation on a 2 node Active/Passive cluster.
Current environment:
SQL : 2005 Enterprise SP2
Windows: 2008
Which is the correct option from below?
Option1:
1.) Move both instances on one node (active/active)
2.) Run the patch files from active node
Installer automatically upgrade passive node first and than active.
3.) After installation reboot the passive node.
4.) Once passive node came online than failover the instance on that node
5.) Reboot the other node.
6.) At the end failback the instances as per the previous set up
Option 2:
1.) Move both instances on one node (active/active)
2.) Run the patch files from active node
Installer automatically upgrade passive node first and than active.
3.) After installation reboot the active node.
4.) Once active node came online than failover the instance to second node
5.) Reboot the second node.
6.) At the end failback the instances as per the previous set up
Option 3:
1.) Move both instances on one node (active/active)
2.) Run the patch files from active node
Installer automatically upgrade passive node first and than active.
3.) After installation reboot the active node.
4.) No need to reboot passive node.

Install the SP on the active node and then reboot the Active node followed by the Passive node reboot.

No need to failover before rebooting the second node?
Rebooting does the failover back to the primary node.
