Hi,
Where/how do you suggest to start learning about the basics of a DBA please?

If you look to the left side of the screen there is a link there labeled "Stairways." That is a series of lesson plans on various aspects of becoming a DBA. That's a great place to start locally.

After that, I have written a few chapters in a book called Beginning SQL Server Administration that might help.

From there, you just need to do the work. Volunteer at a local non-profit or school to build a database for them.

Along with what Grant stated, buy a copy of the SQL Server Developer's Edition, install it on your home machine and start practicing! Not sure how much the currect version costs but it used to be around $45 USD. It's worth its weight in gold so far as learning how to use SQL Server as a DBA goes.

Hi, I have been looking at the stairways but I do not see a link which tells me the daily jobs of a DBA i.e. I know the basics of design but I am after something intermediate for a day to day job of a DBA such as backups, rerestore, mirroing, etc...

Can you point me to the right links please?

Each environment (and instance of SQL) is going to have different administrative tasks that are going to need to be done at different intervals (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.). Some that you know you will need to know how to do such as backups, restores, creating logins/users, running DBCC checks you can look up in Books Online as a start.
