I have a server which max memory is set to use all available memory. What's best practice when it comes to setting up the max sql server memory? Should I leave it to the default 2147483647? or should I set it to a lower amount, a percentage of the actual memory present in the system, which in this case the system administrator set it up to 8GB. It seems that every time I monitor the server it marks to be 95% and higher in using the memory. I'm using red gate monitor and it doesn't show any big processes or sql queries running but the metric's alert is constantly notifying me of these alerts.

It might help to give specific info about your SQL version and relevant server OS version.
