    WHat would be more useful for a production DBA to pick up - MCSE type material or SQL Server BI stuff?

    Neither, IMHO. Some really hard-core, "Black Arts" T-SQL would help any DBA whether they are a System DBA, Application DBA, ETL DBA, or a Hybrid. Then, since you brought up both MCSE and SQLServer BI, "When you come to a fork in the road, take it." 😀 Do both. Please see the following URL.
