Hi all,
Should I be concerned:- I've got a 41mb tempdb .mdf file with a 259mb .ldf file that doesn't seem to be clearing down and is constantly stuck at 259mb.
I know this is normally an issue on database .ldf files (where the .ldf file size is much larger than the .mdf) and can be caused by not doing any/enough transaction log backups (amongst other things) but is this the same for tempdb and if so how do I go about reducing the size of the .ldf (mainly for housekeeping as it's not having an affect on the performance of the server or db's)?
Many thanks for any thoughts.

Are you seriously concerned with a 259 MB log file? That's tiny. Leave the poor little guy alone.

I know it's comparatively small and I feel like the school bully but from the point of view of best practice (and a little anal retentiveness as well) I'd prefer to see the .ldf lower than the .mdf.
By comparison, even on the SQL instance hosting my largest database the tempdb .ldf file isn't that big (and it clears down) and that server has more traffic going through the app and database than this one does, it just struck me as 'out of character' and I'd be remiss if I ignored it which is the main reason why I ask I guess.

in terms of best practices, your tempdb is definitely in need of some configuration changes, but this is not one of them. I recommend reading my whitepaper on tempdb and then reconfiguring it: Demystify Tempdb Performance & Management
