Log Shipping - Point In Time Recovery

  • Hi

We have Log Shipping as one of our DR solutions. Basically, we take a TL backup every 15 minutes to our DR server, we keep a maximum of 3 days worth of TL backups, which we're looking to extend to 10 days, so that we can roll the Production database back further back in time.

What is the best method In restoring the Production database to a specific point in time? Would I need to apply the backup of the night before, then apply the TL up until the required restore time?

  • please provide full schedule details of any scheduled backups that occur so that a restore path may be suggested

  • A full back is initiated 10 minutes past midnight every night, current retention is 3 days, where then the backup are copied off to to tape. We're looking at storing at least 10 days worth of backups and logs (as part of Log Shipping).

So, in theory, should the client need to roll back to a certain period in the past 10 days, they can do.

  • I would restore the latest full backup from the previous night and then apply the transaction logs that were backed up sequentially so that all logs will be restored with no recovery with the exception of the last one in the sequence so that it can be restored 'with recovery' to make the database available for the users.
