Hypervisor versus VM

    I have just noticed for the first time at the end of one of my SQL instance, when I select the version it ends in hypervisor.

    What is this? I have googled around and from what I understand it basically means that it is a host. Does this mean this server is hosting other VM's? Aswell as one of my SQL instances?

    In addition, i have also just noticed all of my VMs which have (hypervisor) at the end are running SQL 2008 r2.. then ones with (VM) are running non R2.

    So what does the hypervisor actually mean?
