I have a new Server with Windows Server 2012 installed.
I'm going to install SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Edition.
I have some SQL Server 2008 R2 Databases which I want upgrade to 2012.
Can I upgrade without installing 2008 R2 on the new Server?
If I take the backup and perform a restore what else do I need to do to in addition to setting the compatibility mode?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

just restore the 2008 R2 database to the 2012 instance and the database engine will upgrade the database for you.

Thanks.
That is what I did when I upgraded database to 2005 & 2008.

Hi Perry
a quick doubt
Can we use Export import tool to do this job

You could, but why would you want to? Restoring a backup's going to be faster and less work.

In case it gets necessary: You can't restore a 2012 database back to 2008 even if you don't change the compatibility level.

Why the sarcasm? I learned this myself the hard way once. Hopefully others can avoid it.

Good to know, because I almost did that. (See, some of us are still noobs making admittedly dumb mistakes...)
