Transfer Data

  • Howdy everybody,

What is the best way to transfer 20GB in 3.122 km(three thousand kilometers) distance?

    1. Backup direct to target

    2. Backup local and copy to target

    3. Data Import/Export

    ....

    what yours suggest??

  • Distance really to a point does not matter. All digital data packs travel at the speed of light. What matters, is what is in between the two points. How many hops, and how busy the network is between the source and destination.

20Gb is very small, I would create a backup and then copy it or FTP it to the destination.

  • If you have SQL 2008 Enterprise or SQL 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise you can make a compressed backup and move the data even faster.

  • I moved a VLD backup from New York to Denver, CO. I backed up the database and FTP'd it to the destination. It took several hours but it moved it. 20gb db is tiny in comparison.

As a previous post indicated, if you have the ability to create a compressed backup, use it. Makes for a much smaller backup.

    Good luck.
