Hi,
I understand it's best practice to seperate log, data and temp files over seperate drives, however is this still being done for people running on SAN's?
When doing a new SQL install, I asked for additional drives, It was mentioned to me that this is not done when storage is on a SAN because there are no dedicated spindles for the drive. All spindles are shared among the SAN.
Everything I read about discusses this practice as important as well as selecting the right RAID type for the files... Is this also something that is also no longer done?
I would really appreciate any thoughts, advice or past experience regarding this.

If you're running IBM XIV that is a correct statement. Although this is just my experience EMC and HDS are not like that, spindles are shared to be more cost effective. If that's the case the best option would be work with SAN admins to find you the "Quietest" spindles to share your drives with maybe?
