Hi, I'm a developer that spends most of his time in the middle tiers of web applications. I'm currently running Oracle 11g XE and SQL Server 2008 Express on my Windows 7 laptop because most my clients use enterprise editions of either Oracle or MS RDBM systems and I have to be reasonably proficient in developing SQL for both environments. So my installations are essentially sandboxes to play in.
I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort to upgrade my installation of SQL Server 2008 Express to SQL Server 2012.
Any thoughts?

I would make the effort to upgrade. There are new features that you will want to learn.

Sure. If they're just sandboxes to play with, SQL Server 2012 will have all the features you already use in SQL Server 2008 + exciting new features in the TSQL language (sequence, try_parse, new and enhanced windowing functions, ...).

I am not sure about the SQL Express installation but all the 2012 management and development tools can live side-by-side with the 2008 R2 and earlier versions. This will let you support clients on either version.
