Hi,
I need to update sp2 and cumulatives in our sql server r2 2008.
i could see in microsite site that there are around 5 cumulatives patches after Sp2.
do i need to apply all cumulatives after sp2 or only the latest cumulatives is enough?
Please clarify.
Many thanks.

From the Microsoft site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935897:
Cumulative update (CU)
•The update can be requested by any customer, regardless of their support offering.
•The update is released every 2 months.
•The update contains the following:
???All previous critical on-demand hotfixes to date.
???Fixes for issues that meet hotfix acceptance criteria. These criteria include workaround availability, customer effect, reproducibility, the complexity of the code that must be changed, and so on.

Yes, only latest SP and optional latest CU.
Btw: Microsoft recommends to only install CU if you experience issues solved by the CU. Quote: Apply it only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems. Also test it thoroughly before installing on production.

As already stated, I would be certain that you have an actual issue that the CU will fix (read the release notes for the CU). Microsoft do not fully test the CUs (there words) where they do with the SPs. So where it is a good idea (and good practice) to keep up to date with the latest service packs that doesn't necessarily ring true for CUs.
