how to set the column level encyption in sql server 2008 in production enviroment without drop existing column and what are method available for encrypt the data in sql server 2008 standard edition.

Column level encryption is available from express edition.
All encryption method generate a varbinary as output so you probably must add a new column of varbinary type, encrypt the data, remove the old not encrypted and make appropriate change to application/sp to use column level encryption.

without creating varbinary column not possiable..?
