2008 Versus 2012 Launch Point

  • I am just starting my journey to MS SQL DBA .

I wish to enhance my employability, I am already a time served Sys Admin/MCSE in the Financial Services sector.

    Do I start with 2008 or 2012 ?

Will a thorough understanding and completed exam track in 2012 provide the knowledge and skills required to administer 2008 in the real world ?

Also considering the 2008 exams are to be retired this July should I still follow their training and once complete to a satisfactory point then move on to 2012 ?

    Your thoughts are appreciated !

support ending as of 7/8/2014 for 2008 and 2008R2

Now just my 2 cents worth:

it would be my thought to start with 2012 so as to be able to advise my employer of the need to upgrade / the advantages of upgrading / etc. .To begin to apply that knowledge to the existing 2008 DBs to make the upgrade relatively painless .... and possibly point out the capability to do additional things with the data (reports data analysis, etc) thus making my employer feel secure. You know follow the old boy scout motto "BE PREPARED"

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
