one of the drives on our server has a total space of 80gb, out of which 70gb is occupied. But when i checked the details there is just one folder which occupies only 5gb.the rest not sure what is occupying..can any1 suggest any steps in locationg the missing space

Is whatever application you are using to look at the files and folders set to show hidden and system folders?

If you are allowed to use free utilities in your environment I recommend installing and trying space monger or windirstat. They both will scan a drive you specify and provide a gui-based picture showing you how your space utilization is divided up.
