According to the MS link below, upgrading from 2005 sp4 to 2012 is supported.
It does not specifically mention 2005 sp3, which is old, I know, but still widely used.
Can anyone shed any light as to whether this is supported or not?

You'll have to install sp4 first before you do the upgrade to 2012.

That's implied, but not stated, in the TechNet article.
I suggested via Connect they update the article to avoid confusion going forward.

It says
The table below lists the supported upgrade scenarios from earlier versions of SQL Server to SQL Server 2012
Since 2005 sp3 is not listed, it is therefore not supported.
