Transaction Log Full error 9002.

  • Hi I had a transaction log full message yesterday (Error: 9002, Severity: 17, State: 3.) and was not able to get info on why the error occured. Does anyone have a list of the error states and their meaning for 9002 messages?

    SQL server 2008R2 ENT

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Gail, thanks for the reply. I had seen your informative article previously. In this case the log filled overnight and had cleared before anyone was able to get onto the system to investigate further so no chance to check for an open tran or check the log_reuse_wait_desc state in sys.databases.

Is the state in the 9002 error (Error: 9002, Severity: 17, State: 3.) actually the same as the state of the log_reuse_wait_desc in sysdatabases? ie In this case the log filled due to an Active backup or restore?

  • Nope, sorry. You'll have to monitor and see if it happens again
