is it possible to rebuild indexes in share point server?

You will need to provide more details - SharePoint relies on a number of underlying databases, if you want to rebuild the indexes within those databases, you probably can ... but it may have an impact on your support agreement, you will to double check that just to be sure.

You can - we do too. We found that the timer job that rebuilds indexes only rebuilds an index once it becomes 30% fragmented. It never does any sort of reorganization and this became an issue with some of the larger tables since 30% of the fragmentation would be 10s of GB.
If you Google "sharepoint index defrag" you'll get a lot of good information - including what steps you need to do to replace it with your own.

It also depends on other factors as well, such as:
SP version and service pack level
what databases
SharePoint included a procedure called defragmentIndices after SharePoint 2007 SP2.
