The frustrating nature of Maintenance Cleanup Task

  • Does anyone know what the maintenance clean-up task exactly does, and why it is so slow?

Have a look at the attached.

    Check Database - 19 minutes

    Backup Database - 39 minutes

Clean Up Task 1 - 14 minutes (this deletes *.bak files)

Clean Up Task 2 - 3 hours (this deletes *.dif files)

Clean Up Task 3 - 14 hours (this deletes *.trn files)

I don't suppose there is much anything can be done to speed it up, but just wondered if anyone else had any experiences with this task and what they did.

  • Hmmm, we'd really need more info about your server and the actual job steps to say anything or certain, but one thought that strikes me is perhaps you're actually doing msdb cleanup (deleting old backup history records) in addition to deleting the files. My experience is that this operation can be quite a timesink in some cases. But, if you run it on a daily basis, I would not expect it to be...

  • deleting files on remote/shared location could be one reason.
