Database growth

  • I used Idera's SQL Diagnostic Manager to do a database growth forecast and I exported it to a PDF.

I got values for Actual Database Growth(MB) and Actual Data File Size(MB). The confusing part is that the values of Actual database growth are increasing(from 8/1/2011 to 2/1/2012) but the values of Actual data file size remained almost the same(from 8/1/2011 to 2/1/2012). Should I use Actual Database Growth values or Actual data file size values for forecast(for the next 2 years)?

I've attached an excel sheet(Database_growth) which shows the values.

  • A database file will only grow when all the space in the file has been used - and the autogrowth setting is defined. That setting should be defined to a fixed amount instead of a percentage - and it should be set to grow large enough so it doesn't have to grow again automatically before you can schedule the time to manually grow the file.

With that said, to forecast your growth rate - you need to look at the actual database growth numbers. This should be showing you how much space is being consumed in the data file every day.

  • Thanks Jeffrey.

Looking at the Actual database growth values, this database has grown approximately 24GB in the last 6 months. So, can I predict that it might grow at the same rate?
