How to copy and paste from a RDP session to your Local Desktop

Hi All,
Is there any way to copy and paste from vpn session to our host session? Please advise.

In the RDP app, click Show Options, go to the Local Resources tab, and share the clipboard. That should do it.

Maybe I should have phrased differently, what I mean was, how do you copy and paste from VPN session to your host session(laptop).

For example, when you work from home using VPN connection.

Same way you would Cut, Copy and Paste any where else:

Ctrl + X

Ctrl + C

Ctrl + V

You sure about this?....Have you done it?....apparently, it's not working for me or I am not sure if you understood my scenario.

If you have done it, please let me know exactly how....normal ctrl x or ctrl c won't work.

for me, a VPN session just gives me an ip and DNS services on my work LAN so i can see all the servers on the lan.

so if i open my SSMS and connect to a server on the work LAN, it's transparent and cannot affect the clipboard.

As Gsquared mentioned, if you are using an Remote Desktop Protocol connection, syncing the clipboard is an option, and as i remember it, you can only cut copy paste text, not objects or images.

are you using RDP?

Yes I am using RDP after I connect to my desktop using VPN connection.

My work desktop is a VDI and I don't have SSMS installed on it.....so, from my desktop I RDP to each server. So, if I am physically at work what you suggest would work for me to copy something from remote server to my desktop, however, if I am at home and using VPN connection, there is another layer there and I cannot copy anything from server to my personal laptop. Maybe, it might be company security/policy settings.

Anyway, I will try your suggestions and keep you posted.

Hi Lowell & all,

I've tried what you suggested and it does not work for my scenario. I am able to copy the data from remote server to my work desktop however, not to my laptop which I am using to connect to my work.

If anyone find any additional information, please keep me posted.

I have used several VPN clients and have had no issues. What VPN software are you using? Have you checked with your IT team to determine if they have something enabled in your VPN layer?

It might be a policy enforced by your system administrators. It's not in the VPN, but in the RDP settings.

I'm under the same restrictions here.

I work around it using ledelog[/url], which is basically a sort of "private" pastebin.

Try copying from server to workstation, then from workstation to laptop. You might be getting a Kerberos issue with copying from the server (2-steps) to the laptop. Not sure, but it's worth a shot.

I think Gianluca hit the nail on the head there. The AD administrators could have a GPO in place which is overriding your RDP preferences. We do this where I work regardless of whether or not you are connected via a VPN or not. It is endlessly frustrating.

You would need to get the group policy changed for you to be able to do it.
