window for searching a new login is not opening up in SSMS

  • This is on a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.5057.00 (X64) Mar 25 2011 13:33:31 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

on the client end, where SSMS is installed and when the user is trying to search and add a new login it erroring out instead of opening a new window, with the following error messgae:

The program cannot open the required dialog box because it cannot determine whether the computer named "SERVERNAME" is joined to a domain. Close this message, and try again.

    any ideas ?

is this some how related to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816818 ?

  • hey Hi,

can u refer below the links and once again, can u explain your question briefly.

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/this-program-cannot-open-the-required-dialog-box/d3bf5394-182c-4464-9d38-5e13680f1138

please check the name resolution - make sure that you can resolve the server name from the client - and vice versa

I would also suggest you disabling the firewall completely .

Ensure that the account you are using on the server is a local one (rather than domain based).

    Thanks,

Again my problem is I have one of the database users connecting to my DB server from his local machine using management studio and when they want to add a new login to the DB server they go to security-->New Login --> Search (to pull a list of logins) so when they click the error message which I posted in my original message.

Verifying DNS resolution makes sense to me, I'm in the process and will let you know. But I dont understand disabling firewall rules, how can they make a connection to a remote server at all if there is no firewall rule in the first place ?

    Thanks

  • I'm getting this error opening a user pickder dialog box while connecting to SQL 2012 on Server 2012 from SSMS on a Win 7 client. I noticed when I disable the firewall on the server the dialog box opens fine. I do have ports 1433 and 2383 open so i'm not sure how to resolve this.

    Thanks!
