SCOM 2012 monitoring pack for SQL Server

  • I'm researching this monitoring pack to add on to our current instance of SCOM 2012. Using Idera SQLdm for most monitoring, and I get a solid amount of monitoring capability and alerts from SQLdm as well as SQL server.

I have about 10 production SQL servers and 4 of these are clustered in 2 fail-over environments (sql 2005 and 2008). Only have 2 licenses for SQLdm.

Is anyone using this tool to help monitor their SQL servers? Is there much performance overhead? Good Dashboard for 10 plus servers down to the database level?

Trying to take advantage of a product we already own, but don't want to waste time if it doesn't add much value for db administration.

  • I have used both too, currently implementing SCOM 2012 across a 2 node cluster, and to be honest,I prefer DM all day long. The server guys seem to like SCOM, its quite good in the fact that it can monitor a whole application solution i.e. all 3 layers and gives us a cute little architecture diagram.

But from what I can see from the SQL management packs, it feels like perfmon with historical capabilities and some tables.

P.s. Im really enjoying the collation issues with the DWH and OPs manager DB though! 😀
