Apart from being smaller than uncompressed backups what are the other benefits of compressed back-ups?Are there any risks of doing compressed backups only?

Smaller backup size... less storage needed.
At the same time backup compression increases CPU usage. I'm not aware of any other disadvantages.

From all the tests and production work I've done with compressed backups, the only down-side is a very minor increase in CPU usage during the backup or restore process. The benefits are, yeah, storage savings, but, you also get faster backups. Since the writes to disk are the most expensive part of the process, doing fewer of them makes it all much faster. The speed increase is worth doing the compression all by itself.
