I was told that there's a difference in the way server side trace is setup in SQL 2005 and SQL 2008. Could someone please explain the difference? I need to automate it, so that the trace runs all the time.

What difference? I don't see any differences in sp_trace_create, sp_trace_setevent, or any of the related functions. Maybe some more events/columns added that I'm just not seeing?
Anyway, I have trace scripts I've been using for years on various SQL Server versions, and I've not yet had to revise them. So if there are changes, they're not universal.
