I have been a bit slow to get to grips with some of the new stuff such as power pivot, power view and SSAS tabular model.
I guess also some of the way that the SQL Server BI stack is starting to integrate with Sharepoint.
I am planning on using my laptop (32 bit) as a development machine.
I am looking at running Windows 7 ultimate, SQL SERVER 2012 development edition
thats the obvious ones. Is there some kind of development version of Sharepoint 2010? If not can I install enterprise 2010 sharpoint on a non server based operation system?
Office 2010 Pro is a given but is there anything else I need to get me going with Power Pivot?

You'll need to install the PowerPivot add-in into your Excel.

May end up having to go to Windows Server Operating system

Running SharePoint on your 32-bit laptop will be slow. You might want to install Windows Server, as that OS is a bit more efficient in it's memory handling.

having discovered that the laptop is not suitable for going to windows 7 this means new laptop.
Was looking at prepping two hard drives - the one that will come with the laptop which hopefully windows 6 and SQL 2012 developer and then a seperate hard drive or VM that would contain server os / SQL Server 2012 / Sharepoint.
Is there an easy way of doing this. MS used to have VMs you could download?

There are still some VMs you can download:

You'll need HyperV to run this, but I think it is included in Windows 8.
Just make sure you have enough RAM 🙂

Excellent. Looks like I may need to tread carefully with which version of Windows 8 but that is absolutely what I need.
Just need to sort out a laptop now.
