SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Packs and CU Packages

  • I am in stalling SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition and I would like to Slipstream in the latest Service Pack and CU Package.

I tested this successfully with Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2008 R2 and I found cummulative update 11 for SQL Server 2008 here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2715951 --> this Cu says it is for SQL Server 2008. Are there different Cummulative Update Packages for SQL Server 2008 R2??? Or can I apply the one found in this link to SQL Server 2008 R2 ??

The CU updates for 2008 and 2008R2 are different, see here and here.

  • Thank you for the link to the slipstream guide.

    I downloaded CU2 for SP2 (SQL Server 2008 R2) from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2740411

This is a brand new install and I will be building out Dev and Prod environments to migrate our SQL Server 2005 Databases to. Do you recommend installing the post SP2 hotfixes? and if so, do you know if CU2 is the latest post SP2 Cummulative Update for SQL Server 2008 R2?

I'm asking because I don't normally install the Cummulative Updates unless it is a fix for a specific problem I am having. This being a new install, not sure if I should patch it to the hilt..

  • I don't apply CU's unless I hit the bug they address but starting with a fresh dev install is the one scenario where you can safely include the latest CU as you will be able to fully test your application against that release level.

Having said that its just as valid to go to the latest service pack as again you can fully verify against that release level.

CU2 is the latest cumulative update.

  • Thank you !!!!!!

  • I have been googling all morning for :

Cumulative Update #2 for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2

    Does anyone have a link?

  • Thank you! guess I need to beef up on my google skills

  • Here is a good way to stay on top of new releases:

For your specific version and patch level: The SQL Server 2008 R2 builds that were released after SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 was released

For all versions: SQL Release Services Blog[/url]

I apply SPs and the latest CUs prior to entering a testing cycle. CUs can contain some important fixes but are not guaranteed to be fully regression tested by Microsoft (SPs are) so many will avoid applying CUs unless they experience a specific issue it is supposed to fix.
