Hi,
I'm trying to run and develop a series of data warehouse packages directly on a SQL host and have been having difficulties with BIDS crashing on the server. By crashing it normally 'whites out' when running the SSIS packages and states that it is not responding. It also 'whites out' when attempting to open the packages to edit or view them.
The server has 64 GB of memory, and is only used for development of this package. It has Windows 2008 Enterprise (64 bit) installed (not R2) and it has SQL 2008 (not R2) SP2 installed (and Analysis Services).
The errors are intermittent, and restarting BIDS sometimes resolves the problem.
I've also has issues running the packages stating that it can't open a connection to the database (but the db's on the server). I get an error when opening a Data Source Designer and clicking on Edit:
Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {C8B522D0-5CF3-11CE-ADE5-00AA0044773D} failed due to the following error: 8007007e.
My solution has 51 SSIS packages, which are linked to each other.
It's probably worth adding that I don't have any Add-in's running in Visual Studio (BIDS).
Does anyone else have similar problems running BIDS?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What is the max memory for SQL server on this box? How much video memory?
Have you looked into a memory defragger/cleaner such as CleanMem?

Hi,
SQL is configured to claim between 15 Gig and 25 Gig of memory.
Analysis Services is configured to claim 20 Gig max.
Rebooting the server sometimes helps the problems dissapear, but we recently performed a full HP diagnostic on the server which returned no errors.
I haven't tried a memory defragger or cleaner though.

I think the issue as you described is going to be somewhere between video memory and the memory defragger. The CleanMem has worked well for me with BIDS doing the same sort of thing. Then again, none of my solutions are that big (but it is only a laptop with 8GB so maybe some offset there 😉 ).

I've just installed the software, not 100% sure what to do with it yet though!
I've set up a schedule and it thinks it cleared the system memory sucessfully.

Hi,
Just thought I'd mention that the ClearMem utility does seem to have had an effect and so far Visual Studio seems to be working more reliably.
So if anyone else is having issues it is well worth giving a go.
