i hope there should be some role in msdn to view error logs in ms sql? I had given onces

Looks like SecurityAdmin to me.

Usually some log files by default are secured.

Just look at a Windows machine as a general user and pull up the event log.

Is what they need to read something that could be written to a separate section of the Windows log that they could be given access to?

That might be a cleaner way to handle it.

The MSDN article doesn't say anything about privileges. Basically what you need is a text editor.
