I am a beginner in SQL Server..my question is for enabling database mail.. i came to know to that SMTP should be enabled? if so, how can i enable that ? and is it necessary to have SNMP also enabled ..?

SNMP is not required as well. Either one or both is ok but not mandatory.

SMTP is the protocol for sending mail.
SNMP is a network management protocol.
Database Mail will send across SMTP.

SMTP is a server for sending mail & you have to open a PORT 25 from your server to SMTP server....

I think the easiest way is to use the Database Mail Configuration Wizard.
