I would like to increase the size of my C drive , so i can run both SQL Server 2008r2 and SQL server 2012.
Do i have to buy aftermarket software, or does windows have a reliable method of doing this?
Thanks

Google the "DISKPART" dos commands and you can do it via windows without needing to purchase any software.
So if you have 1 drive split 50GB C 100GB D then you will need to shrink D to increase C, unless you add capacity into the raid array.

There's several things you need to be aware of before trying to resize a partition.
First and foremost, do you *HAVE* to do this, or do you have another machine to use?
Is this a production server? If so, you'd be better off getting a new box.
Now, is it possible to resize the C:\ partition? Depending on the version of Windows installed on the server, yes. If you have Win 7, Server 2008, or Server 2008 R2, and if you have free space on the drive to extend the partition, it is possible to extend the C:\ partition.
Now, if your drive is mostly full, and you have no free space to extend the partition, then your only option is to buy and install a new, larger drive. The pain of doing this can be reduced using one of the many drive cloning applications available, most of which will also allow you to resize your partitions at the same time.
