Are you trying to install this on a VM?
If so uninstall the VM helper tools (guest additions) and try again.. Re-install them after..

You're referring to hyper v right, never had this issue under VMWare

I had this error under VMWare and VirtualBox..
After MUCH searching I found an article that at: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/d96afca2-9cb7-4a5c-b8a9-9ee2d3fedef1/[/url] About half way down a response by Ryan_AU.
This was the clue I used to solve my problem. It was so unusual I printed it out and clipped it to my wall with a couple other "don't forget" items.

Hmm, I like other users near the bottom of that thread always slipstream the latest SP and CU so that is probably why I have never received the error. As I say never had to mess with the default tools install.

Hi,
this is for Slipstream for SQL 2008 SP1 not SQL 2008 R2. i need for SQL 2008 R2.

The process is exactly the same for any SP or CU update for SQL Server 2008 onwards.
