Diskpart extend on SQL data drive

  • Hello, I am preparing to use Diskpart.exe for the first time to extend a SQL SAN volume. This is a Win2003 server so I have to use Diskpart command line, not Win2008 GUI. Info is here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325590.

I am trying to find out how it affects SQL. I can't tell whether SQL has to be stopped (obviously safest approach) or if Diskpart can be used on the fly while SQL and databases are in use.

    thanks for thoughts

  • SQL can be running when diskpart is used.

Run into this a number of times and SQL doesn't even need to be restarted..

    Win 2008/Win 2008R2 for sure.

  • Thanks. Have you used it on a Win 2003 server running SQL? Just want to ask since you say "Win 2008 for sure."

  • I haven't used it in 2003 with SQL running so I can't be as 100% certain, but I'm like 98% certain. It doesn't take the colume offline, it updates the partition map. The new space is available but uninitialized, a lot like a quick format, it lays down enough to make the drive live but doesn't lay out the entire structure..

In retrospect if I asked myself the question whether I felt it was safe I wold say yes and do it.
