Hello Guys.
I've just started as a SQL Server DBA (I've been a developer until now) and one of my first tasks is to upgrade all the companies SQL Server 2000 instances to SQL Server 2008.
Unfortunately some of our instances of SQL Server 2000 have not had SP4 applied so I'll have to do that first before anything else. I have noticed that there are several security updates that can be downloaded after installing SP4 but I'm concerned about which ones I need. Do I need to apply them all or do I only need to apply the latest?
Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.

I googled and didn't find anything definitive that said you had to upgrade to SP4 prior to upgrading to 2008...where did you see that?
my recommendation would be only if it is manditory, then only install SP4, then upgrade to 2008.
the security upgrades would be more specific to SQL 2000 specifically; the items they address would be redundantly fixed in higher versions, if they apply.

If you're going to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 straight away, then just get your servers to a position where they can be upgraded. If that's SP4, then just apply that and do the upgrade. Once the upgrade is done, don't forget to apply the latest patches regularly to SQL Server.

Thanks for the response guys.
The supported upgrade paths for SQL Server 2008 at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx show that SQL Server 2000 needs SP4 applied.
In an ideal world I'd like to apply SP4 and then upgrade to 2008 straight away but just in case that doesn't happen, do you guys know what security patch(es) I should apply?
Thank you,
Andrew

That would be for an in-place upgrade.
I would recommend installing fresh instances of SQL 2008 on new servers and migrating the databases over. You will encounter less headaches this way. In-place upgrades are more error prone.

Thank you Adam.
I think that's the way forward however I cannot guarantee that SQL Server 2008 will be available for me install as a separate instance. I'm really just trying to cover all eventualities and make sure that if it is not available, our instances of SQL Server 2000 have all the necessary updates,

All you need to do is get them up to pre-upgrade stage.
Upgrade to SQl 2008
And then get the download patches for the updates
they will be relevant to SQL 2008 and not SQl 2000 , this was your getting the job done as fast as possible,
cheers
