Does SQL 2005, 2008, 2008R2 install different files/DLLs based on Intel or AMD processors?

  • Hello Everyone,

I'm looking at getting an answer to this simple question. When installing SQL 2005, 2008 or 2008R2 does different files/DLLs/etc. get installed based on the processor type (Intel or AMD)?

    Simple enough?

    Like to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks,

  • It should not and I'm 99% sure it does not.

I don't have a reference to that, but you could easily find out comparing two installations.

  • I am 99% sure the answer is no.. 32 vs. 64 yes, many different. AMD 32 vs. Intel 32, don't believe so.. AMD 64 vs. Intel 64, don't believe so. Bot sure why this is important though..

  • Thank you all for the information.

I reason for the strange question is that our server team was to move several WMWare ESX servers from our current AMD system to a new Intel system. Now I'm not sure how the HAL on the OS will handle the change of advance feature of the different chip sets. My task is to see if SQL will have a problem.

Even MS support says that the SQL server installation will be fine, but have no documentation that states this and it appears there is nothing in the wild (internet) that supports this answer. My fear is that will have have issues later on and MS support will tell me to reinstall the OS and SQL server. That would be no fun.

Thanks for taking time to answer my question 🙂

  • I was guessing it was something like this.. As far as SQL is concerned I don't see it being a problem.. The OS should be ok too but that is a point where I think you'll see the most changes, but even then I think you'll be ok.

  • I agree with Elliott. Once you have the OS running, then SQL Server should neither know or care if the processor is AMD or INTEL.

  • There are currently 3 versions of the SQL binaries and there will be differences between each of these files. There versions will be the same but there will be fundamental compilation differences.

  • To follow up. The virtual machine CPU should be handled transparently to the OS. All of this is handled and emulated by VMWare.
